Heartworm Disease

Heartworm is a fatal disease that affects dogs of any size, age or breed. Heartworm disease is just what the name says – worms that live in the heart. Mosquitoes transmit heartworm. A mosquito bites a dog that has heartworm disease and picks up “baby heartworms”, called microfilaria, from the infected dog’s blood. When the same mosquito bites another dog, it injects the baby heartworms, now called larvae, under the skin of that dog. The larvae migrate through the tissues under the skin and eventually into the blood stream where they catch a free ride to the heart. Once in the heart the worms lodge themselves in the right chambers of the heart and mature to adult worms.

Signs of heartworm disease are not seen until the disease is advanced. Symptoms may include coughing, exercise intolerance, swelling of legs or abdomen or difficulty breathing.

The best way to deal with heartworm disease is to prevent it. There is a treatment for dogs with heartworm disease; however, the treatment is expensive and is very harsh on the dog’s body systems. In fact, the treatment can sometimes be fatal.

Prevention of heartworm disease is easy and relatively inexpensive. First, your dog must test negative for heartworm disease. Then, medication can be prescribed to prevent your dog from contracting heartworm disease. Most dogs tolerate the monthly medication well.
